Comparison Guide of Major US Insurance Companies

There are hundreds of insurance companies in the market that do business across numerous states, as well as many others that are limited to certain areas only. These insurance companies may specialize in one or two types of insurance, or offer almost all kinds of coverage to the public. These insurance types include annuities, health insurance, supplemental insurance, travel, disability, car, and home insurance. If you are looking to purchase an insurance product, one major factor to consider is the financial stability of the insurer. This is why it is important to look at certain indicators such as rankings and size.

State Farm Insurance

State Farm’s main business is the State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, though it also has at least 12 other wholly-owned insurance company subsidiaries. It is ranked by Fortune 500 as among the Top 50 American companies in terms of revenue. It is also considered as the world’s largest property and casualty insurer. In the United States alone, State Farm insures the most number of cars and homes. Overall, State Farm employs about 66,000 employees and has around 18,000 agents.

Allstate Corporation

Other awards received center around its workplace diversity and its being an equal opportunity employer. Allstate has continuously been awarded the Top Company for Executive Women by the National Association of Female Executives, as well as named one of the “Best Places to Work” for numerous racial and social groups such as Latinos and African Americans. Allstate Insurance was also named part of Fortune Magazine’s America’s Most Admired Companies list.

GEICO

GEICO stands for Government Employees Insurance Company, an auto insurer that is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. GEICO does not sell its products via agents; instead, they sell directly to the customers. Savings generated from nonpayment of agent commissions are redirected to advertising campaigns, making GEICO an insurer with several well known and memorable ad campaigns and slogans. GEICO employs over 27,000 people and has been given high ratings by rating agencies for their financial stability (AA+ from Standard and Poor’s, Aa1 from Moody’s, and A++ from AM Best).

Farmers Insurance Group

The Farmers Insurance Group is the third largest insurer for private passenger auto and homeowners insurance in the country. They have around 20,000 employees and more than 50,000 agents.
